US oil giant Marathon says it has made a ‘significant’ find on a block in Kurdistan.
The Mirawa-1 well, on the company’s Harir block 40miles northeast of Erbil, has been tested with a constrained flow rate of mpre than 11,000 barrels per day.
The well, drilled to around 14,000ft on the block, discovered multiple stacked oil and gas zones.
Testing on non-associated zones in the drilling also found flow rates of around 72million cubic feet a day.
Work on the well has been suspended ahead of it being put into production. A nearby find at Jisik, around nine miles away, will now also be tested after indications it is a similar structure to the Mirawa find.
“We look forward to further appraising this discovery and drilling our next Harir block prospect, Jisik,” said Marathon Oil president Lee Tillman.
“The success we and others have had in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, including this most recent discovery, demonstrates the importance of this region as a potential major hydrocarbon producer.”
