An oil field services firm is to make dozens of job cuts in Aberdeen, it can be revealed today.
Baker Hughes is to slash its workforce in the Granite City.
The firm was unable to confirm the number of positions that would be lost, but our sister site, the Evening Express, understands 30 current staff will vie for around five positions at the company’s engineering offices on Woodside Road.
A consultation has started and employees have elected representatives to meet the firm.
Those affected will submit questions to the reps to take to management.
It is not clear whether other city Baker Hughes branches will be impacted, but further job cuts have been reported in America.
A company spokeswoman said: “Baker Hughes is simplifying its organisational structure and operational footprint globally, including consolidating facilities and reducing its workforce.
“Though difficult, these actions will help the company meet the challenges of today’s market conditions while positioning it for growth opportunities in the future.”
The cuts follow the collapse of a £22 billion merger deal between Baker Hughes and Halliburton last month.
The tie-up would have created a business employing more than 136,000 people, including several thousand in the North-east.
But the deal was called off due to poor market conditions and difficulties getting it past the regulator.
Halliburton pulled-out of the takeover and was forced to pay Baker Hughes a £2.4bn termination fee.
Baker Hughes, which has 39,000 employees, has since has since released a number of statements about reducing costs and simplifying its business.
Martin Craighead, Baker Hughes chairman and CEO, said last month: “We intend to build on our strong foundation and market position by simplifying the structure of our business and evolving our commercial strategy to deliver significant value to shareholders.”
