Statoil chief executive Eldar Saetre said the second quarter of the year had been characterised by health and safety as the company revealed its first adjusted loss.
The oil boss made the comments after a North Sea helicopter crash in April which killed 13 people.
They had been returning from Statoil’s Gullfaks B rig when the rotor blade detached from the helicopter close to Bergen.
Saetre said the company was “closely monitoring” the impact costs cuts were having on safety.
But he insisted accident in recent years had not been as a result of cost saving measures.
Earlier, the chief executive said he believed oil would return to between $50 and $60.
