Some of the people and companies helping to keep North Sea oil and workers safe were honoured at an awards event in Aberdeen yesterday.
The Offshore Safety Awards – organised by Oil and Gas UK (OGUK) and Step Change in Safety – had previously seen a total of 18 companies and individuals shortlisted as finalists in six categories.
Guests at yesterdays’ final voted by text for who they thought should win after watching the candidates’ presentations and video “selfies”.
Nearly 300 people, including representatives from across the industry as well as MPs, MSPs and other key players, attended the event at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.
The award for safety leadership went to EnQuest’s Derek Ellington in recognition of his role as operations manager – and previously installation manager – on the Heather platform.
CAN Group offshore inspection engineer and safety representative Dave Thomson was named safety representative of the year, while the workforce engagement award went to Taqa telecommunications expert Allan Smillie.
US energy service firm Baker Hughes, whose practices helped it achieve a full year without any recorded health and safety incidents, won the innovation in safety award.
Baker Hughes introduced a Tour de France cycling race-style safety system, with teams of workers vying for yellow jerseys for safety performance.
Stork, snapped up by Dallas-based Fluor late last year, won the award for occupational health (OH) after investing in a new OH facility allowing it to tailor support to the specific needs of workers.
Russell Gould of Bristow Group and Malcolm Garrington of CHC Helicopter came away with the sharing and learning gong in recognition of their efforts at the helm of helicopter safety organisation HeliOffshore.
OGUK health, safety and environment policy director Mick Borwell said: “All our finalists and winners are to be congratulated for playing their part to ensure that we continue make improvements in our safety performance as an industry.”
