Total said it could start the second phase of its Incahuasi gas project in Bolivia as early as next year.
The French oil and gas giant said it would make the move if market conditions and incentives for investments are in place.
The $1.2billion project will officially be inaugurated today, after beginning production at three wells in August.
Total said it aims to ramp output to more than seven million cubic metres of gas per day by the end of the month.
It will account for about 10% of Bolivian production, from 5.2million as soon as a compressor is added to increase pressure.
