Engineering consultancy ABB has started work on a contract to manage the dismantling of a refinery in south Wales.
Zurich-headquartered ABB, which has a base in Aberdeen, was appointed principle designer for the project in Milford Haven and kicked off its involvement in July.
The process is expected to go on for two years.
Waste Recycling and Decommissioning has been chosen as the dismantling contractor.
The Milford Haven Refinery ceased production in November 2014. About 60% of the process units will be dismantled and rebuilt at an existing facility located outside the UK.
Steve Andrew, demolition and remediation manager at ABB Consulting, said: “The refinery has been shut down for some time now, and although it has been decommissioned, there always remains a risk of a residual level of contamination. Thorough checks will need to be carried out to ensure the works can be completed safely.
“Due to the site’s scale and complexity ABB will need to work closely with the Client and WRD to ensure this project is completed successfully. This will involve detailed planning and preparation to develop safe systems of work, to ensure the project is successfully completed within the agreed schedule whilst achieving world class SHE performance.”
