The Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) has called on oil firms to protect its facilities from the impact of bad weather, almost a year after an offshore worker was killed.
Companies are now responsible for protecting facilities from wave-in-deck impacts.
Letters have been sent to operators of mobile facilities concerning how they should respond to the accident on the Troll field.
Rune Morten Narvag, 53, was killed when a huge wave impacted the side of the COSL Innovator rig and hit as high as the accommodation module.
Four other people were injured in the incident on December 30th last year.
The wave was estimated at the time to be as high as 30 metres when it hit the rig.
The Norwegian Marine Authority (NMA)has sent a letter to all owners of Norwegian-flagged semi-submersible facilities calling on them to implement new guidelines from the DNV GL.
Compliance documentation is being called on for by November 1st.
The PSA said the letter applies to all facilities on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, regardless of flag state and classification society.
It has been agreed that the NMA should monitor Norwegian-flagged mobile facilities, while the PSA monitors the remainder.
Follow-up by both agencies will be based on the NMA’s regulations and DNV GL’s guidelines.
