The oil industry is renowned for straight talking, brash arrogant ego driven people, and indeed many emulate the characters, and we see it on TV and in movies regularly. People who don’t take no as an answer, people who push harder for more and of course people who strive for success.
So, it is interesting that we now have a business man, who has these qualities, about to take residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and my expectation would be he will drive American industry forward and a large chunk of that will be around the oil and gas business.
This may well be domestically, we are all aware of how much investment there needs to be in refining industry, and the cross over to steel. Whilst the land drilling industry may not become as prolific as it has been, with some US domestic economic insulation there is potential for growth there.
Internationally, why not throw themselves at the markets of Venezuela, Iran, Iraq and Cuba, all countries that could benefit economically massively from US investment, security and stabilisation.
Mr Trump can make massive moves quickly, and will need to settle things down both in his back yard and with international players.
He must now heal the rifts, galvanise support and deploy his business brain in how to get Americans back to work, and indeed make America great again. The task is gargantuan, I do think, though, that this real businessman, experienced in running corporations turning over billions with a straight-talking, no nonsense approach is exactly what America, and perhaps also the UK, needs right now.
Among his early tasks is the need to clean house and remove the non-decision making wasters who just burn time and money.
If he makes good on his commitment to close down immigration then he has to focus on putting Middle America back to work and have them actually make things again.
This would be part of protecting the American economy, building it from within and helping it provide for itself rather than outsourcing. As a matter of fact, this is all starting to sound remarkably similar to my suggestions for a strong post-Brexit Britain.
This is indeed America’s Brexit; I just hope they now get on with it and don’t pause to gloat, challenge or reminisce.
The President-elect is a business man first, and I’m not actually sure he is a politician at all, so let him get behind business, including the oil business, and push it all out there. Stop America being a policeman for the world, and start being a world business leader, it will take time, but look at what could potentially come forth.
