An oil and gas firm has donated thousands of pounds to a children’s charity.
Nexen UK has given more than £13,300 to Aberdeen-based Charlie House, which supports youngsters with severe disabilities and complex conditions across the north-east.
Yesterday, the company’s managing director, Ray Riddoch, handed over the cheque to Mel Dyer, and her son Matthew, who are just one of the families supported by the charity.
The presentation took place at Nexen’s Kingswells headquarters, where Mr Riddoch expressed delight that the company was supporting an “excellent cause”.
He said: “It was great to raise that amount and I am so proud the guys got together and raised that amount of money.
“It is a fantastic reflection of Nexen’s approach to supporting the community.”
Mr Riddoch added it was important for the firm to maintain its fundraising efforts, despite the oil and gas downturn.
He said: “We’re in the third year of hard times in the industry, but we’ve maintained our community contribution budget at £1million a year.
“I’m very proud of the fact we still support the community with that amount of money.”
The charity, which was started in 2010, offers respite care for parents, but also a range of activities designed for the whole family.
Last night, the service confirmed the money would go towards expanding its family sports club on a Saturday.
Some of the cash will also go towards hiring another nurse or support worker.
Lynn Batham, corporate and community fundraiser, added: “We wouldn’t survive without donations like this and it’s a phenomenal amount.
“This donation will have a huge impact and will go towards our current services.”
