Five Universities in the UK will launch a three-year project later this year which will use drone technology for the inspection of offshore wind turbines.
It will also look at modelling to reduce costs and improve performance levels.
The £3.8million project has been funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
The five institutions taking part include Cranfield University, the University of Manchester and Heriot-Watt University.
The project will undertake the necessary research for the remote inspection and asset management of offshore windfarms and their connection to the shore.
