Aker Solutions have been awarded contracts to provide the design and technology for building carbon capture plants at two Norwegian facilities.
Aker’s technology will be utilised at Yara’s ammonia plant on Herøya and Norcem’s cement production facility in Brevik, Norway.
The oil services company has previously carried out extensive testing at a pilot carbon capture plant in Brevik, with such promising results that Norcem selected them to provide technology at its facility.
Norcem and Yara are two of three companies in the running to be funded by the Norwegian government, with the aim of one of them being operational by 2022.
Aker’s plans for the two sites include a carbon capture plant integrated with the present facilities, with the designs expected to be completed by September.
Since 2008, Aker have been involved in designing, testing, and developing advanced carbon capture technology, and now, with the increased awareness of climate change that comes with the Paris Climate Agreement, there is a building interest about its potential within different energy industries.
Luis Araujo, chief executive officer at Aker Solutions, said: “Perfecting carbon capture will be key to meeting global climate goals.
“The confidence placed in us by both Yara and Norcem shows we are taking a leading role in this crucial technological push.”
