An offshore worker feared dead after going missing from a North Sea rig has been described as a “much-loved” family man.
Steve Sutherland was reported missing from the Noble Lloyd Noblecorr rig late on Tuesday.
A massive search for the 49-year-old was launched, with coastguard helicopters scouring the Mariner Field, 90 miles east of Shetland.
No trace of the father-of-three was found, and the search was scaled back.
Police say there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.
Last night, his devastated family released a statement and said Mr Sutherland, from Aberdeen, was a massive football fan, popular with all those who he met.
It stated: “Steve is a much-loved and well-respected father, grandfather, partner, son, brother and uncle, adored by his children Morgan, Lenah and son Joe, and doted on by his four grandchildren.
“Steve was born in Aberdeen and grew up in Northfield. He is well-known among the junior football league in Aberdeen, having played for clubs like Glentanar FC, East End and Parkvale.
“He also coached at Lewis United and is a massive Aberdeen FC fan.
“Steve is popular, easy to get on with and well-liked by all those who know him. He is missed by everyone.”
His sister, Denise, also posted on social media asking for her friends and loved ones to pray for Mr Sutherland.
And his employers, Interwell, said: “Our immediate thoughts are with the family and friends of our much-valued colleague at this extremely difficult time.
“Our employees are always our first priority and we are working with the relevant authorities to support them in any way we can.”
Detective Inspector Norman Stevenson, who led inquiries onboard the rig, offered his condolences to the Sutherland family.
He said: “We continue to liaise with next of kin to keep them informed of any developments. Our thoughts are with them at this time.”
