Donald Trump is “looking at” the future of US sanctions on Russia, according to a White House spokesman.
Asked what the current administration position is, economic adviser Gary Cohn said: “Right now, we don’t have a position.”
He spoke to reporters on Air Force One as Mr Trump headed to the G7 summit in Sicily.
G7 leaders kicked Russia out of the group of wealthy nations for its annexation of Ukrainian territory.
Mr Cohn said he expects Russia to be a topic during the two-day summit.
Pressed on what specifically the White House was looking into on sanctions, he would only say that the president has “many options”.
