The United States remained the world’s top producer of petroleum and natural gas hydrocarbons in 2016, according to figures released by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).
That means that the country has topped the table for the fifth year in a row.
The country held on to top spot despite a decline in production for both petroleum and natural gas relative to their 2015 levels.
The figures show that total petroleum and gas production was almost evenly split in the US and Russia.
However, in Saudi Arabia production heavily favoured petroleum last year.
In the United States, crude oil and lease condensate accounted for roughly 60% of total petroleum hydrocarbon production in 2016.
The EIA’s Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) showed production of petroleum is expected to increase, reaching 15.6 million bopd this year and 16.7 million bopd next year.
