A new app launched today which is designed to help potential investors and policymakers identify potential areas of renewable interest.
The Global Solar Atlas application launched at the Pacific Power Association (PPA) Conference in Apia, Samoa, and is able to spot probable fresh sites for renewable energy investment and will help smaller countries kick-start an offshore energy programme.
Developed by Solargis and funded by the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP), users are able to identify renewable prospects through global and regional maps and data, which can be printed and examined.
Mr Andrew Daka, Executive Director, Pacific Power Association, said: “This new tool provides an initial indication of solar resource potential before governments and investors carry out their own more detailed analysis and will likely make it easier for Pacific island countries to adopt solar power where appropriate.”
The maps use satellite atmospheric and meteorological data and helps potential investors identify natural resource areas and data helps them compare sites.
Riccardo Puliti, Senior Director and Head of the World Bank’s Energy & Extractives Global Practice, said: “We hope that the Global Solar Atlas will help inform the crucial planning and investment decisions needed over the next decade to shift to more sustainable forms of energy.”
