ExxonMobil today committed itself to reducing methane emissions from its production and midstream facilities across the US.
The largest publicly traded international oil and gas company announced an enhanced reduction program focusing on sites operated by subsidiary XTO Energy.
XTO president Sara Ortwein described the program as a “comprehensive initiative”.
Measures include the increased use of technology to detect and reduce faulty emissions, as well as facility design improvements for new operations and phasing out high-bleed pneumatic devices, among others
Methane is a major component of natural gas and among the worst of the greenhouse gases, being roughly 21 times more damaging carbon dioxide.
