Helicopter manufacturer Airbus has clarfified that an aircraft that crashed in Japan earlier this week was not the same kind used in North Sea operations.
The helicopter involved in the crash in Japan was an AS332 Mk1 – referred to in local media reports as an AS332L – not the same as the AS332L2 which was grounded from North Sea operations following a fatal crash off Norway last year along with sister model the H225.
The AS332L Super Puma helicopter involved in the accident in Japan was operated by the Toho Air Service, which confirmed that four male staff members were on board at the time of the accident.
In relation to the Japanese accident, in which four people died, Airbus Helicopters released this statement: “We are aware that an AS332L operated by Toho Air Service has been involved in a fatal accident and we stand ready to provide full technical assistance to the authorities.
“Our thoughts and sympathies are with all those who have been affected by this accident.”
