Shell’s North Sea boss said today that the construction phase of its Penguins area project will create up to 400 UK jobs.
Steve Phimister, Shell’s vice president for upstream, UK and Ireland, also said up to 70 people would work on the field’s new vessel once it is up and running.
Mr Phimister was speaking after Shell revealed it had taken a final investment decision on redeveloping the Penguins field, north-east of Shetland.
The project will involve the construction of Shell’s first new manned installation in the northern North Sea in almost 30 years.
Mr Phimister said the floating production, storage and offloading vessel would be built at a yard in Asia.
US firm Flour was awarded the construction contract for the unit.
But Shell said Scottish jobs would be created “across the project”, in areas such as project management, design and engineering, subsea engineering, pipeline and manifold construction.
