Utilities firm Centrica has announced the acquisition of a 50% stake in one of the UK’s largest biomethane suppliers, Barrow Green Gas (BGG).
Purchased through its energy marketing and trading business, Centrica claim BGG ship “almost half” of the green gas used by homes across the UK.
Established in 2012, BGG supports biomethane producers by facilitating the supply of biomethane to gas buyers, and provides Green Gas Certificates (GGCs) to energy suppliers.
The company said the deal will provide Centrica with access to biomethane market expertise and “strengthen its ability” to offer customers a wider range of renewable fuel.
The acquisition will also facilitate BGG with access to Centrica’s capabilities in international markets, market information and tools.
Cassim Mangerah, Co-Managing Director for Energy Marketing and Trading, said: “We expect the biomethane market to continue to grow across the UK and Europe, underpinned by supportive regulation and growing customer demand for renewable energy.
“We’ve been impressed with BGG’s expertise and customer relationships. We believe this partnership creates a unique platform for us to help grow the green gas market internationally and meet the changing needs of our customers as they transition to renewable energy sources.”
Tim Davis, Managing Director of BGG, said: “We are delighted that Centrica is investing in BGG. Having a strong partner means we can look to the future with confidence. We will continue to focus on the needs of the green gas market while being able to offer our customers a wider range of services through Centrica’s position in the wider energy market.”
