The oil and gas arm of industrial giant General Electric (GE) officially opened its global services facility at Montrose yesterday.
GE Oil and Gas said its £3million investment had allowed the consolidation in one location of two previous operations in Aberdeen, at Bridge of Don and Altens.
The new site is expected to deliver benefits for clients and capacity for anticipated growth in Europe.
It employs 164 people, including 11 local apprentices, taking the total workforce at Aberdeen-based GE Oil and Gas to more than 1,050 in Scotland and in excess of 1,600 across the UK.
Neil Saunders, global services leader, GE Oil and Gas drilling and production, said: “The new Montrose facility is crucial to our global services operations. The UK and northern Europe markets are a key focus for GE Oil and Gas, and this investment demonstrates our long-term commitment to the region”.
Opening the site were Subsea UK chief executive Alastair Birnie and Scottish Development International chief executive David Smith.
Mr Smith said: “An investment of this magnitude must be commended, particularly in these difficult economic times, and it clearly shows the important role Scotland plays in GE’s global operations”.
Aberdeen mechanical service company EnerMech said yesterday it had invested £200,000 in specialist equipment to boost its hydraulics business line. The new machining facility allows the firm to manufacture parts which previously had to be sourced through suppliers.
