A joint investigation has been launched by police and the Health and Safety Executive following the death of a diver who had been working on an oil platform in the North Sea.
Russell Robinson died on Sunday on board the Balmoral floating production vessel, about 140 miles north east of Aberdeen.
The 33-year-old, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, was employed by Aberdeen-based Integrated Subsea Services (ISS) and was one of a team of three divers carrying out a routine diving operation.
Ian Herd, managing director of ISS, said: “This is a tragic situation and our thoughts go out to Russell’s family, his friends and colleagues some of whom are still offshore.”
ISS is contracted to Premier Oil UK to provide subsea inspection services on the Balmoral.
The cause of Mr Robinson’s death is currently unknown and a joint investigation is being carried out by Grampian Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Premier Oil’s North Sea business unit’s general manager, Nigel Wilson, said: “We are working closely with our colleagues at ISS to support his family, the dive team and other personnel offshore and to establish full details of what happened.”
A spokesman for Grampian Police added: “We are investigating the death of a 33-year-old man on-board the Balmoral.
“Inquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the death of Russell Robinson following the incident on Sunday.
“The man’s next of kin have been notified. Grampian Police is unable to comment further at this time.”
