Chinese firm Cnooc has taken up an option for a Maersk rig to drill an additional infill well on its huge Buzzard field in the UK North Sea.
The deal gets under way in the first three months of next year and will keep the Maersk Innovator rig on contract until June 2020.
A further six one-well options remain as part of the agreement between Cnooc and Maersk Drilling.
Yesterday, the rig contractor said it was on course to meet it targets following its demerger from Danish conglomerate Moller-Maersk Group.
Buzzard is one of the largest producing fields in the UK North Sea.
The field, located around 60 miles north-east of Aberdeen, had to shut down twice last month due to an issue with topside pipework.
