GERMAN turbine manufacturer Nordex SE has signed a contract to acquire roughly a 40% stake in the project company which is developing the Arcadis Ost 1 windfarm offshore Germany.
This is an early example of the massive German programme to further step up the country’s already considerable wind-based offshore power-generation capability.
Arcadis Ost 1 will be an offshore benchmarking “guinea pig” for Nordex.
The planned site for Arcadis Ost 1 is within the 12-nautical-mile zone of the German part of the Baltic Sea and 17km north-east of the island, Rügen, at a water depth of about 40m.
During the preliminary construction phase, about 70 turbines with a combined capacity of at least 300MW (megawatts) are to be installed there. This puts the nominal capacity of the turbines at 4MW-plus and is in line with the Nordex decision to develop a new machine for offshore deployment.
The windfarm is expected to achieve an annual energy yield of more than 1,100gigawatt/hours, sufficient to provide 282,000 households with electricity, simultaneously avoiding more than one million tonnes of carbon-dioxide emissions. Construction of the first turbines is planned for 2014. This is based on the assumption that licence permits will be awarded in 2011.
The planned area has been zoned as a suitable maritime region and the preparatory work on the application process has reached an advanced stage.
