THE Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) is poised to launch an initiative to encourage graduates and early stage professionals in the subsea sector climb the ladder of success.
Known as SUT Plus, it broadly mirrors the young professionals network recently established by the Energy Institute and successfully launched in Aberdeen.
SUT+ will also be launched in Aberdeen, with a kick-off event scheduled for next month.
According to Tony Laing of Framo, who serves on the SUT’s Aberdeen steering group, Plus will “provide a programme of technical and networking events which will attract ‘young’ professionals and assist them with their professional, personal and social development in the early stages of their careers.”
Cornerstone objectives are for them to:
o Gain exposure to the business environment;
o Build commercial knowledge and industry awareness;
o Develop the knowledge and understanding of the industry on a broad spectrum;
o Build a network of strategic industry contacts;
o Work towards the key competences required for those working towards chartership.
Key contacts in the SUT+ group are Scott Sonthalia of Wood Group Kenny and Stavros Polymenis of Fugro.
Laing said: “The branch committee is fully supporting the efforts by Scott and Stavros and working with them to ensure the success of the initiative. It is great to support the rising stars at all levels.
“We had an excellent Christmas lecture event on December 6 with primary schools, even hitting STV news. Obviously launching the SUT Plus group in February is an important next step that aims to try and close the experience gap and sustain / stimulate the energy sector.”
