Norway’s giant Aldous/Avaldsnes discovery has been renamed Johan Sverdrup after the leader of a political movement in the country.
The field hit the headlines last year, with reserve estimates of 1.7-3.3billion barrels of oil equivalent, making it possibly the third largest Norwegian find yet.
The name was intended to reflect the importance of this project in specific, and the oil and gas industry in general, said Det Norske, a partner in the field, which is operated by Statoil.
Johan Sverdrup was the leader of the political movement that led the introduction of a parliamentary system in Norway and is an important symbol of the emergence of a democratic Norway, the firm said.
Norway’s Minister of Petroleum and Energy Ola Borten Moe said: “While Johan Sverdrup himself played a significant role in shaping modern Norway, I hope this new field will contribute significantly in developing the Norwegian democracy and our society in the future.”
