MORE than 200 north-east business leaders heard yesterday that Scotland’s constitutional future would hinge on the oil and gas industry.
Atholl Duncan, executive director at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland, told a business breakfast at the Marcliffe Hotel in Aberdeen that oil would be the “number one business issue” – followed by renewable energy – in the independence debate.
Speaking at the Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce event, Mr Duncan urged politicians across the spectrum to tell businesses if they would be better or worse off in an independent Scotland.
The former BBC journalist said: “We are entering the most important period for Scottish people and businesses in 300 years and no one seems to be paying a blind bit of attention.
“What does it mean for us in business? Would business be better off? How much of the debt would we inherit? What would the tax regime be? Would we be in Europe?”
Mr Duncan said part of the discussion would centre on future revenues from the North Sea oil and gas industry and renewables.
