LOWESTOFT College is inviting applications for the pilot of its one-year Energy Skills Foundation Programme, which is due to start in September. It says the course is innovative and the result of consultation with energy-industry employers.
Course delegates will gain hands-on experience in a range of skills that reflect the sector’s needs, including electrical, mechanical, process, fabrication, and welding and maintenance.
Together with site visits to the East of England region’s most important energy sites, Lowestoft College says its programme will enable course students to make an informed choice as to what career path they wish to follow, including potentially a place on an Advanced Apprenticeship or placement with a local company involved in the energy sector.
Celia Mackie, executive director of skills for energy, said of the pilot: “It opens the door to a much wider group of youngsters that may not have considered the opportunities for them in the exciting and growing energy industry.
“The essential success factor of the programme is that it is led by, designed with and will be run in partnership with those companies that will be the employers in the future and so it will meet their needs. Yet again, delivered in the East of England first.”
Testing and interviews will be completed this month with 15 successful applicants starting the programme in mid-September.
