UK oil and gas firm Rockhopper Exploration said yesterday that an oil discovery in the Falklands extended west of the original well, fuelling hopes the find was large enough to open up a new province in the area.
Rockhopper said it did not plan to test the flow of oil in its latest Sea Lion appraisal well, nearly 2½ miles west of the original discovery.
Rockhopper is one of a number of explorers drilling in waters off the coast of the Falklands, but tests have yet to establish whether there are sufficient quantities of viable oil to justify investing in infrastructure.
Rockhopper has previously said that two earlier appraisal wells at Sea Lion had been successful and had commercially viable flow rates.
