Aberdeen-based international drilling and engineering contractor KCA Deutag said yesterday it had won a major contract with oil giant BP.
The firm has been awarded a new deal to manage all of the BP-operated platform-drilling assets in the Caspian region.
KCA Deutag held the previous contract and landed the fresh deal after a competitive tendering process.
The Granite City company said the latest work, which has just started, is for five years with the option to extend by up to a further five years.
It is thought the value of the deal could exceed £300million.
It involves six rigs, and the Aberdeen firm believes it is the world’s largest single platform-drilling contract.
KCA Deutag chief executive Holger Temmen said: “We are very pleased to have won this long-term contract award for all of BP-operated platforms in such a key strategic market.
“We have a valued relationship with BP in the Caspian region, developed over more than a decade, and focused on continuous improvement at all levels.
“KCA Deutag is now one of the largest employers in Azerbaijan, and this award is very much a reflection of the quality of our Azeri workforce and their hard work and dedication.”
The contract covers platform-drilling operations and maintenance services and employs about 700 KCA Deutag staff; more than 500 of them Azeri citizens.
The group’s involvement in Azerbaijan began in 1997 with the conversion and mobilisation of its T-105 land rig for the Chirag platform.
