The Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) will offer free membership to help energy professionals hit by the latest industry downcycle.
The SUT said the drop in crude prices had resulted in some of its loyal members being laid off or put at risk of redundancy.
They including engineers, scientists, other professionals and students spread across more than 40 countries.
Engineering and technical staff made redundant from SUT member companies will be given free individual membership.
A new “hardship scheme” has also been brought in to cover the 2020-21 membership fees of existing SUT members who have lost their jobs or are self-employed and unable to find paid work.
Furthermore, the SUT has created a new forum to help members stay in touch and share information about employment opportunities.
SUT chief executive Steve Hall said: “This offer is effective immediately, and awards of membership will be decided by myself on a case by case basis – we value our members and want to help them stay as part of our community through the current difficulties, and to work with them on helping guide our industry through the complex transitions that will be taking place over the coming years.”
