Nearly three-quarters of people in Scotland are in favour of wind power according to a study – but only 18% would choose it as their first choice of generating electricity.
A survey on behalf of industry body Scottish Renewables has found about 72% of adults support wind power.
In another poll released by Friends of the Earth Scotland today, less than a fifth of Scots say it would be their first choice of renewable energy.
The results of the surveys – both commissioned by YouGov – come in the lead-up to the Donald Trump’s appearance at the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday.
Yesterday, environmental campaigners said the billionaire businessman’s anti-renewables stance was completely out of step with public opinion.
Niall Stuart, chief executive of Scottish Renewables, said it showed clearly “once and for all” the stance of the majority of people in the north-east.
“We believe people in this part of the country understand the close links between energy production and jobs and investment, and also the need for Scotland to diversify into all forms of renewables,” he said.
