Petrofac Training Services (PTS) and Raytheon have developed Hi-Con survival training for the Johnson Space Center site.
It is described as “survival training delivered from a world-renowned location by a team of experts that bring superior experience in high-consequence and immersive survival and safety training”.
The OPITO-approved courses include:
o Basic offshore safety induction and emergency training (BOSIET).
o Further offshore emergency training (FOET).
o Helicopter underwater egress training (HUET).
PTS says these are three core offshore survival training courses delivered throughout the oil and gas industry worldwide.
Aberdeen-headquartered OPITO is wholly owned by the oil and gas industry and is responsible for making sure it has a safe, skilled and competent workforce. Its standards, qualifications and workforce development frameworks are used in 37 countries worldwide.
Albert Skiba, OPITO international’s vice president for the Gulf of Mexico, said: “OPITO exists purely to improve the safety of the oil and gas workforce and to ensure that people return home safe at the end of the day. Houston is the energy capital of the world; however, the use of a structured standards-based framework stretching from basic offshore safety through a range of specialist response roles has not been applied here in the way it has in most other exploration and production areas of the world.
“This announcement (of OPITO-approved courses at the Johnson Space Center site) marks a significant step forward in the creation of a common global standard in offshore safety and marks a step-change in the availability of internationally-recognised world-class safety training for workers in the Gulf of Mexico.”
