The head of French oil firm Total said yesterday he expected production from the Elgin-Franklin field to restart before 2013.
The Elgin platform in the North Sea was shut down more than two months ago after a gas leak, but Total was able to plug the well last month.
Total chief executive Christophe de Margerie said he was confident operations on the installation would resume by the end of the year.
Last night, a spokesman for the firm confirmed it would be “several months” before work resumed.
He said: “There is a lot of work still to be done before normal operations can safely be resumed on the Elgin complex.
“As well as the technical, operational and logistical challenges that will need to be met, there are also a number of regulatory steps to be taken.
“Taking all that into account, we would not like to be definitive about when a restart might be possible beyond confirming that it is likely to be several months yet.”
