Renewable energy consultancy Natural Power has teamed up with marine engineering firm SeaRoc to launch a base at Kirkwall, Orkney.
Natural Power, based at Douglas said the new joint venture was to support the development of marine projects and encourage the growth of the wave and tidal energy industry.
The Orkney office will provide a base for Natural Power and SeaRoc staff working on wave and tidal projects in the Orkney and Pentland Firth area, with expert advice being given in consent, resource assessment, ecological advice and surveying.
Previous work in the Orkney and Pentland Firth area includes Natural Power’s resource assessment study of tidal energy potential for RWE npower Renewables and a resource assessment study of wave energy potential for SSE.
SeaRoc developed the safety management system for Ocean Power Technologies as well as providing construction, design and management (CDM) co-ordination for the project.
The Pentland Firth is seen as the number one potential tidal powerhouse in the UK and Orkney is the key R&D hub.
