Australia has created the world’s largest network of marine reserves to restrict oil and gas exploration and protect sensitive marine habitats.
Minister of environment, Tony Burke, says the 3.1million sq km protected area will encompass a third of the country’s territorial waters. Prior to the expansion of the marine reserves, only 800,000 sq km were protected.
Under the new legislation, which is yet to be made law, the number of marine reserves will increase from 27 to 60.
