Tidal energy developer Meygen has lodged plans for the first phase of a 400 megawatt project in the Inner Sounds of the Pentland Firth.
The firm, a joint venture between Australian technology developer Atlantis Resources, investment bank Morgan Stanley and power generator International Power, hopes to start work on the development in 2013.
It has submitted an offshore application to Marine Scotland and plans for onshore facilities to Highland Council.
A formal consultation period on the scheme started today and ends on September 7.
This would be for a 20 megawatt demonstration array of one megawatt devices within the Inner Sound, between the mainland and the island of Stroma.
The development will use Atlantis Resources’ underwater tidal turbines and Rolls Royce-owned Tidal General Limited’s turbines, both of which are being tested at the European Marine Energy Centre on Orkney and were assembled in the UK.
Meygen is registered in Edinburgh with offices in London.
