Total has decided to team up with the Schlumberger and Chevron collaboration to further develop the Intersect next-generation reservoir simulator. The French major is to contribute engineering resources and expertise to expand the effort.
Intersect is an industry first, combining Chevron’s reservoir simulation capabilities and reservoir management experience with the software development capability and commercial experience of Schlumberger.
Using advanced mathematical techniques, the simulator goes beyond the capabilities of current-generation software to simulate large and complex reservoirs using high-resolution models that allow the testing of a large number of scenarios to increase the effectiveness of development plans and the design of innovative production systems to maximise field recoverable reserves.
Development of the simulator began in 2000 as an extensive research and development effort between Chevron and Schlumberger and was launched commercially in 2009.
Total already has experience of Intersect as it contributed thermal simulation expertise to the development effort leading to the 2011 release of the software’s thermal option.
