Prior to the 11th Annual Chem, Petrochem & Refining Asset Reliability Conference in January 2021, marcus evans group held an interview with one of their key speakers, W. Brent Robinson. Brent currently holds the position of Manager, Asset Management Reliability & Integrity at BASF.
ABOUT THE INTERVIEW:
At the 11th Annual Chem, Petrochem & Refining Asset Reliability Event, you will be speaking on maintenance and reliability plans to enhance site operations, why is it important to form a holistic approach when developing these plans?
It is important to realize that the various elements of a maintenance and reliability program are closely linked and often dependent upon one another to drive sustainable improvements. For example, it is likely not realistic to expect sustainable improvements from planning tools without an effective work identification and scheduling process. Viewing M&R improvement as a holistic effort acknowledges these dependencies and allows the practitioner to develop and implement a plan that will build a solid foundation and support improvement across all the various elements.
What conditions of the plant do you focus on to develop strategies and why?
I focus on foundational maintenance topics like work identification, prioritization, planning, scheduling, feedback, and continuous improvement. A solid foundation then supports the evaluation and improvement of basic reliability topics like bad actor elimination, preventive and predictive maintenance optimization, and effective root cause failure analysis.
How have you seen performance improve based on your current operations and strategy?
I have seen sites improve profitability by optimizing maintenance costs and improving Overall Equipment Effectiveness by identifying and implementing M&R improvement opportunities.
What is your background? What other roles helped you move to where you are at as a Manager of Asset Management, Reliability & Integrity at BASF?
I received my undergraduate Mechanical Engineering degree and MBA from LSU. I spent the first part of my career primarily in Maintenance and Reliability Engineering roles at several facilities in the region. I eventually moved to management/leadership positions within Engineering and Technical Expertise. In the last 10 years, I have led Engineering and Maintenance organizations at multiple plant sites and served as a Maintenance Manager for several Business Units at a very large chemical complex. I have been in my current position for three years. In this role, I lead a team of experts who partner with our business units to provide strategic, tactical, and operational support to approximately 100 sites in the region. We bring strong expertise and customer focus to drive solutions and deliver value across a range of topics including Asset Integrity, Maintenance, Reliability, Technical Materials Management, and Machinery.
