KBR subsidiary GVA has signed a licence agreement with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) of South Korea for the construction of its GVA 4000NCS, Cat D semi-submersible drilling rigs.
The concept is tailored specifically for Statoil to be used primarily for drilling production and well completion in mature fields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
KBR has advised that Songa Offshore, the drilling contractor taken on by Statoil to run the new rigs, has ordered four GVA 4000NCS units to be built at DSME.
The workhorse Cat D has been designed by GVA’s experienced engineering team in Gothenburg, Sweden, and developed together with operator and industry partners to meet a lower cost of drilling, well completion, and to operate safely and efficiently.
The unit is based on the proven GVA7500 design and is able to operate at water depths to 1,300m (4,265ft) and drill wells to a depth of 8,500m (27,887ft).
It is designed for mid-water segments on the Shelf, but is also applicable in other regions and can easily be converted for work in deepwater, high-pressure, high-temperature operations as well as in the Arctic.
