A team of former Aberdeen Grammar School pupils are to compete in a global F1 car design competition in Abu Dhabi later this month.
Team Aeroflux, made up of six pupils who were in Year 6 at the school until this summer, is competing in the F1 in Schools Technology challenge world final after securing top places in regional and Scottish national heats.
Their ultimate prize could be the Bernie Ecclestone F1 in Schools World Championship Trophy.
Their task, over the past 12 months, has been to design, analyse, manufacture and test a gas powered miniature F1 car, which is raced at speeds of over 70km/h.
The scale models, around 20cm long, are raced side by side along 20metre straights.
Team member Craig Walton said: “We’ve been competing in the F1 in Schools Challenge for a year now. No other project we’ve been involved in has taught us so many lessons and built up such a wide range of skills.
“Not only have we greatly improved our physics, engineering and presentation skills, but we have also acquired many new general skills such as team work, delegation, finance, planning, imposing and sticking to deadlines.
“We’re all extremely happy with our achievements and are enjoying redesigning our car, pit display and portfolio for the World Finals.
“We have been communicating with other teams from all across the world and are genuinely excited to finally meet up with them.
“With the main focus of the competition being on the car’s speed, we are really looking forward to seeing what time our new car manages to achieve.”
The competition, aimed at senior school students, saw about 12million students take part across 34 countries.
Team Aeroflux was overall winner in the Scottish regional finals and won best-engineered car and best team marketing and sponsorship awards in the Scottish regional finals.
In the UK national finals they were semi-finalists of the knockout tournament and won third fastest car.
The world finals will be held October 29-31 at Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi, and will be attended by about 250 students from across the world.
