Invergordon-based PSG Marine and Logistics has become the latest company to back a bid to create a free port on the Cromarty Firth.
The company’s managing director, Steve Clark said the Easter Ross North Sea inlet offered the “perfect location” to establish a zone where goods can be manufactured, imported and exported without incurring tariffs.
The UK Government is planning to create up to 10 such zones around the country, with Scottish Ministers proposing a similar initiative to set up “green ports”, with an emphasis on fair work, sustainability and net-zero goals.
PSG Marine and Logistics has joined the steering group of the Opportunity Cromarty Firth, private and public sector partnership leading efforts to win free port status for the area.
Other members include the Port of Cromarty Firth (PCF), Global Energy Group, the Port of Inverness and Highland Council.
The group has said a successful bid would attract considerable inward investment, providing “high quality, skilled jobs and opportunities for the next 50 years.”
PSG Marine and Logistics has been heavily involved in a number of recent high-profile contracts, including port marshalling work at Invergordon for the Moray Offshore Windfarm and support for the development of the Kincardine Floating Offshore Windfarm.
Mr Clark said: “The Cromarty Firth is uniquely positioned to offer the perfect location as a free port, bringing with it the opportunity to maximise job creation and levels of economic growth across the Highlands and Scotland that has not been seen since oil boom in the 70s.
“Opportunity Cromarty Firth already has the support of the area’s leading organisations, and PSG Marine and Logistics are delighted to join the steering group as we bid to make this dream a reality.”
