A £20million plan for one of the world’s first wave power stations off Lewis has been shelved.
Inverness-based Voith Hydro Wavegen say they cannot attract the investment for the 30MW scheme near Shader.
A spokesman for the Western Isles Council said the news was “highly disappointing” and pointed to the delays in the interconnector power cable to the mainland – the cost is now estimated at £700million – and high transmission charges as not helping.
A council spokesman said: “The council will be relaying concerns on these matters to government.
We’ll also be talking to the company to see if there are any ways to reinstate the project.”
The company’s chief executive, Matthew Seed, said it has now abandoned the project and were considering what to do with the site and the lease from the Crown Estate.
