Key figures in oil and gas safety have been named to speak at the Piper Alpha 25th Anniversary Conference in Aberdeen this summer.
Some 167 people died after a series of fires and explosions blew apart the North Sea installation operated by Occidental on July 6, 1988.
Trade body Oil and Gas UK, organiser of the three-day Piper 25 event, said confirmed speakers included ex-US Coast Guard commandant Thad Allen, who led the response to the Deepwater Horizon incident; Jake Molloy, of the RMT union; Bob Fryar, executive vice-president for safety and operational risk at BP, and Miranda Taylor, of Australia’s oil and gas body Appea.
Keynote speaker will be Lord Cullen, who chaired the public inquiry into the disaster. His report made 106 recommendations which have since transformed the way safety is managed offshore.
The event, in the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre from Tuesday, June 18, to Thursday, June 20, will bring together people from across the global oil and gas industry to reflect on the lessons learned from the tragedy, review how far offshore safety has evolved since and to reinforce industry commitment to continuous improvement.
OGUK health and safety director Robert Paterson said: “The purpose of this conference is to mark the 25th anniversary of this tragedy by gathering together some of the world’s foremost experts in their field to not only reflect on the lessons we’ve learned in the intervening quarter of a century, but to openly challenge and debate how we stimulate the industry’s determination to continuously improve safety performance to ensure the next 25 years and beyond never see a repeat of this disaster.”
Around 700 people are expected to attend the conference.
