Former chancellor Alistair Darling will warn business leaders about the risks of independence to the North Sea energy sector at an annual dinner in Aberdeen tonight.
The Edinburgh South-west MP chairs the cross-party Better Together group that is campaigning for Scotland to remain part of the UK.
In addition to a broader discussion of issues around independence, he will talk about the risks to the energy industry of fiscal and regulatory uncertainty surrounding the referendum. Mr Darling will highlight the importance of the UK government’s fiscal support in developing renewable-energy and helping firms meet the costs of decommissioning.
The talk will be given at the flagship event of the Aberdeen, Highlands and islands branch of the Energy Institute in the Marcliffe Hotel, at Pitfodels.
Other speakers include European Union Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger and the chief executive of Maersk Oil, Jakob Thomasen.
