Russia’s Gazprom has signed an agreement in Amsterdam to look at extending the Nord Stream gas pipeline to the UK.
The deal with pipeline firm Gasunie will explore possibilities of continuing the pipework – which comes ashore and terminates at Lubmin, in Germany – farther into north-west Europe and the UK.
It could supply up to 10% of Europe’s gas needs. Gazprom head Alexei Miller said: “The key issue is to sign a long-term contract with our British supply partners.”
