A senior boss at BP told Piper 25 delegates about the root and branch changes the oil major had made in safety management since the 2010 Macondo disaster.
The blow out at the deepwater well in the Gulf Of Mexico led to the death of 11 men and America’s biggest oil spill.
Bob Fryar, executive vice president of safety and operational risk at BP, said: “We’ve been taking action to implement three principles, which we believe…will lead to a framework for safe, reliable and efficient operations.”
The first means improving leadership through bosses spending more time in the field, including training in how to involve staff in safety matters.
BP has also brought in external safety experts from NASA and the US nuclear submarine fleet to help improve safety.
In addition, management systems have been bolstered to encourage the sharing of learning from sites across the firm’s global operations.
Mr Fryar said a new monitoring body had also been set up to improve the company’s system of checks and balances.
