North-East environmental technology firm Recycl8 is growing its team to drive continued growth and enter the global renewable energy market.
Opportunities to expand into the growing renewables sector have prompted the appointment of Lloyd Duncan as the firm’s first energy and renewables adviser.
Recycl8 is a north-east based start-up that works in collaboration with the waste-to-energy and global construction industries to transform incinerator bottom ash (IBA) – normally destined for landfill – into a high-performing, low-carbon concrete solution.
With the cement industry responsible for around 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, it is a sector ripe for innovation. Recycl8 says its unique process can reduce the embodied CO2 equivalent content of concrete by over 60%, meaning 240kg less CO2e for every cubic metre of concrete used.
The company now hopes that its material can help windfarm operators reduce the carbon footprint of the concrete they use, as the sector now looks to undergo rapid growth in the wake of schemes such as ScotWind and the upcoming Contracts for Difference auction.
Mr Duncan has been brought on board to support the continued growth of the business and its longer-term vision to break into different industries across a wider global footprint.
In his new role he will leverage his extensive construction and energy industry experience to explore current opportunities for low-carbon concrete supply within the renewable energy sectors. His remit will also include ensuring that the company pre-qualifies for the supply of high-strength, low-carbon concrete within the wind power supply chain.
Lloyd brings experience in management and business gained across senior managerial roles in oil service companies and the overseas construction industry. He has also had direct involvement in business start-ups, acquisitions and mergers of SME businesses.
Recycl8 founder and managing director, Ian Skene, said: “It’s great to welcome Lloyd to the team at such an exciting time, as we explore new opportunities. We’re currently at an extremely important point in our product testing phase, verifying the concrete strength and end-of-waste classification.
“We’re delighted to have Lloyd on board at this major milestone in our business journey, he continued. “He has already made a very positive impact in helping us to align the company with UK regional offshore wind ‘clusters’ – a collaboration between developers and the regional supply chain, public sector and education bodies striving to develop offshore wind farms utilising new technologies.”
Mr Duncan said he was “honoured” to joining the team.
“Being able to apply my previous experience to assist Recycl8 navigate into different markets is an exciting prospect,” he added.
“As a fellow cohort of the Grey Matters programme, along with the directors of Recycl8, I appreciate the value of being part of the Scottish Enterprise ecosystem and we look forward to where this will take us in the future.”
