The Polaris drillship, owned by Aquadrill Offshore, has caught fire while docked at a port in Sri Lanka, reported local officials.
According to a statement from the Hambantota Port in Sri Lanka a fire broke out in the drillship’s emergency generator room on 15 February. The port’s emergency response team brought the fire fully under control within 33 minutes of arrival on the scene and they were able to prevent serious damage to the drillship and surrounding areas, said the port authority.
The 14-year old Polaris drillship has been in lay up at the Hambantota Port since 11 January 2021. It is expected to remain in port until June 2022.
Aquadrill Offshore was formerly known as Seadrill Partners. The drillship was previously known as the West Polaris, but was renamed Polaris when the owner Seadrill Partners changed its name to Aquadrill.
