A newly-converted biomass plant in England is to shut down from next week after plans to invest in the renewable energy facility were scrapped.
RWE npower dumped plans to extend the operating time of the 750-megawatt facility at Tilbury, having converted it from coal last year.
The plant had been allocated a restricted operating schedule under environmental laws, which were due to expire next week.
The first of three units will close on July 18, with two further units closing three days later. The plant will be decommissioned from October 31, with more than 220 jobs at risk.
“The (forecasts) in terms of where we see electricity prices are not enough to warrant this investment now,” an RWE spokeswoman said.
The company said it was open to other investors taking on Tilbury, and would continue with biomass projects elsewhere.
