Statoil has spudded a new well on its Cliffhanger prospect – after failing to produce positive results last time round.
The Ocean Vanguard semi-submersible rig is drilling the exploration well, west of the giant Johan Sverdrup field, on the Cliffhanger North Prospect.
Lundin Petroleum, who are partners in the prospect along with Statoil, petoro and det norske oljeselskap, confirmed work was underway on the well.
It comes after Statoil came up dry with a previously drilled sidetrack at the Cliffhanger South prospect 4.9km south-east of the new location.
The well is to hunt for Jurassic reseroir and the quality of fractured and weathered basement on the site.
Drilling is expected to take around 40 days at a depth of 1970m.
